& Trauma Debriefing

Trauma Debriefing

Interventions to support those who went through a very stressful event like a robbery, violence, suicide, traffic accident or traumatic death.

  • This program is compiled according to the client’s requirements, for groups of up to 10 participants
  • Duration is 4 to 8 sessions
  • 2-hour sessions, from R2,390
  • The cost depends on the venue and the number of counsellors required
  • The quoted price excludes other expenses, for example, special activities or refreshments and lunch

Specific Groups

When registering for an intervention session you will be asked to identify your need with one of the following:

  • For a family
  • At the workplace
  • For a school or youth group
  • For a community or church group
  • Another kind of group

What to expect

These are short-term sessions to reflect on really stressful events, with those who have lived through the experience with you. It is about sharing what you thought happened, what really happened, and how life has changed because of it. It is about understanding that the event did happen, that it is not happening anymore, that it is a memory, and that you are safe in this present moment. It is part sense-making and part grieving. It is also about learning skills to deal with the stresses in your life because when you are by yourself, all the other traumas that you have tried to bury deep down seem to come back out.

Trauma debriefing is not about reliving the event by recounting and figuring out what really happened. It is also not suited for individual counselling or processing.

We follow a 3-phase program to first create the skills to feel safe and contain what happened and the symptoms you are experiencing, and also to create a safety plan for yourself.

The second objective is to become aware of your personal experience of the situation and to recognise how you are thinking about what happened.

The last part is about the skills to process what has happened and develop resilience to cope with the symptoms.

1-Day Workshops

Workshops focus on developing resilience and self-processing skills, and discussing concepts or experiences around trauma and grief

  • This program is compiled according to the client’s requirements, for groups of up to 15 participants
  • 4-hour and 6-hour programs are available, from R5,990 and R8,990
  • The cost depends on the venue and the program designed
  • The quoted price will exclude other expenses, for example, special activities or refreshments and lunch

Specific Groups

When registering for a workshop you will be asked to identify your need with one of the following:

  • At the workplace
  • For a school or youth group
  • For a community or church group
  • Another kind of group

What to expect

Our workshops are more experiential and open discussion than conventional teaching. We have a variety of exercises and techniques for you to examine your traumas or grief in a meaningful way, and to develop some skills to help you face life. You will also leave with plenty of resources to explore and develop yourself.

Workshops are focussed on trauma and/or grief and will be done in one day (between 4 and 6 hours’ work). Other topics like addiction/substance abuse, relationship issues, or personal development are approached as a symptom of trauma or loss, not as the ‘problem’ to be solved or managed. It is about understanding what happened to you and how you interpreted the event at that point in your life, learning how to be compassionate and nurturing to yourself in the present moment, and developing the skills to be in control of your life from now on. No one wants to be an alcoholic or an abuser. It is a symptom they can’t control, and it creates a great amount of shame and guilt on top of everything else.

3-Day Workshops & Weekend Retreats

These 3-day workshop are normally run as retreats, presented under two themes:

The first is about “A Quiet Connection” where the discussions and exercises focus on introspection, resiliency skills, and skills to connect with oneself.

A second is for “A Stronger Self” with a greater emphasis on exploring and developing safety, containment and resilience skills in the aftermath of a trauma and/or loss.  We also discuss the experiences around trauma and/or loss and exercise skills to process and integrate what has happened. For first-responders and health professionals, we cover techniques on how to approach and assist patients/victims when stressed.

  • Arranged from Friday afternoons to Sunday mornings, or from Sunday afternoons to Tuesday mornings
  • Exclusive events can also be arranged for  groups
  • Depending on what is available at the venue used, we will also introduce you to complimentary therapies like forest bathing, meditation, yoga, equine- or plant-music therapy
  • The cost will depend on the venue, activities available, the program designed, and the number of people per sleeping unit booked
  • The quoted price will exclude personal expenses and using extra services at the venue

Specific Groups

When registering for an intervention session you will be asked to identify your need with one of the following:

  • For corporate leadership
  • For a school or youth group
  • For medical doctors, specialists and veterinarians
  • For nurses, care workers, paramedics, police services, and the like
  • With a focus on grief
  • Another kind of group

What to expect

Like workshops, retreats focus on specific topics within homogenous groups. There are a lot of open discussions, self-exploring exercises and information and resources on techniques and skills shared. The incredible settings of the venues we use allow for more time to do self-reflection and opportunities to connect.

These events allow one to really immerse oneself in the experience. Depending on the venue, it includes complimentary therapies like art therapy, music therapy, drumming, nature therapy / forest bathing, connecting with plants through plant music, or connecting with animals through equine therapy or wild animals.

Field Trips

When dealing with a trauma or a loss, one of the dangers is that we get stuck within ourselves.

Field Trips offer opportunities to get out of your comfort zone and to connect with life in a new way.

  • These adventures are arranged according to the client’s challenges, for groups of up to 20 participants
  • The cost depends on the activity selected and the facilitators and venues available
  • The quoted price will exclude other personal expenses, for example, equipment and clothing needed, training required, transport or refreshments and lunch

Examples

When registering for a field trip you will be asked to suggest your availability for adventures like:

  • A 2 to 4-day hike in the wild
  • River rafting or a 2-day canoe trip
  • Zip-lining or abseiling
  • Hot-air ballooning
  • An adventure race
  • Diving
  • Or offer a suggestion and we’ll try to arrange it

What to expect

These experiences are intended to be an adventure for you. Something that you would not normally do and that is out of your comfort zone.

The value of it is that you get to push your physical boundaries and it is physically demanding. You get to discover your new limits and create a sense of confidence to face the future you may not think is possible. You get to connect with yourself in new ways and redefine yourself.

Note that there will be no direct skills training. You will be with people who also have challenges in their lives, showing the courage to try something different with you. It offers you the opportunity to practice in real life, the skills you were taught during workshops, debriefings, support groups or counselling. And if needed, our counsellors and facilitators will coach and support you through it.

It is the perfect culmination of our slogan to ‘Find healing through each other’.
