— Facing it together

Support Groups

When we get together as a support group, we are all just normal people with pain.

By sharing our thoughts and feelings and frustrations we are witnessing each other as real human beings. We connect with compassion and curiosity, without judgement or criticism.

What to expect

There is something about speaking with others who have gone through similar situations as you did. It is not that anyone would ever really understand and fully comprehend the pain you are experiencing, yet, it is comforting to know that someone else is sharing in your pain.

We are witnesses to each other’s pain and are not judged for what we may think or feel; not even for what we did to cope. We don’t fix each other. We only listen. Sometimes we celebrate the small steps and sometimes we reflect on what we have found helpful in our lives. In the end, you will gain friends and resources to carry you through the tough days still to come.

What to expect

In helping others to deal with their pain and suffering, we absorb more than we sometimes realise. Within these groups, we share our deep pain and frustration and suffering we experience with our patients. We have to swallow the tears and keep a brave face and keep going to help the next patient. It is an unrealistic expectation – one we pay the price for in the end.

In these groups, we also share resources, learn resilience skills and develop the ability to be compassionate with ourselves.
