Pain Management
Pain is like a physical barrier that can keep us from finding meaning in the situation we find ourselves in. It makes moving forward so much more difficult. It robs us of hope.
- An anaesthetist, specialising in relieving the pain of terminal patients and patients with long-term with chronic conditions and back problems
What to expect
The focus is exclusively on relieving pain through medicine and surgery. The anaesthetist works in support of your current doctors and their medical treatments prescribed. As specialists in pain relief, it may be of great value to have them on your team.
Note that it does not involve counselling or physical therapy.
The link between chronic stress and trauma, and physical pain is by now a known fact. The mind has a way of getting your attention. Take those stiff and sore muscles for example. In the last few years, there has been a lot of research that points to just how much of a role stress and trauma play in physical illnesses. Counselling that focuses on reducing stress or processing trauma, will go a long way to assist in slowing down an illness or to better manage the situation.
Like a person with severe depression, medication is used to stabilise and get to a point where one can address the issue. Counselling is almost impossible if you are writhed with pain. Pain management is therefore indispensable for chronic or terminal patients as part of a holistic treatment approach.
Functional Medicine, Naturopaths, Ayurveda & Herbalists
The focus is on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues, rather than just treating symptoms. The body is viewed as a complex, integrated system where imbalances in one area can affect multiple aspects of you health.
It is a holistic treatment that takes into account the interconnectedness of various bodily systems, considering your unique genetic makeup, lifestyle choices, diet, environment, and medical history to create personalized treatment plans.
- Independent practitioners who offer a range of services
What to expect
Instead of solely focusing on managing symptoms, it seeks to uncover and address the root causes of diseases and imbalances, by looking at inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or gut health issues, for example.
There is a strong emphasis on the doctor-patient relationship and collaboration. Patients are active participants in their healthcare, and their input is valued when developing treatment plans.
It highlights preventive measures to maintain optimal health or the development of chronic diseases, by noticing, identifying and addressing risk factors early.
Practitioners often integrate various healthcare modalities, including nutrition, lifestyle changes, counselling, supplements, pharmaceuticals when necessary, and complementary therapies like acupuncture or chiropractic care, to create comprehensive treatment plans.
Treatment plans are dynamic and adjusted over time as a patient’s health improves or changes, with regular monitoring and assessments to track progress and make necessary modifications.
It is particularly effective for managing chronic conditions like autoimmune disorders, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic disorders, as it addresses the underlying causes that conventional medicine might overlook.
Equine Therapy
Horses are probably one of the most intuitive animals we have the privilege to connect with.
Equine therapy is about the embodied, somatic experience of how to regulate oneself and the animal you are working with. It gets you to set boundaries and to be respectful of the boundaries and wishes of the animal. It gets you to form an emotional relationship that is unconditional and deep.
It is effective with depression, anxiety and other trauma-related symptoms, as well as ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, behavioural ticks, substance abuse, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, and other mental health conditions.
- Independent equine centres with horseriding and training facilities
- The facilitators are trauma-informed and are trained in working with children and mentally & physically handicapped persons
- 1-hour group or individual sessions
- Some facilities accommodate trail rides/outrides
What to expect
The focus is on interaction and co-regulation, and on building a respectful relationship with an animal.
This includes grooming and care; it is about spending time with the horse, walking it, brushing and combing, cleaning and feeding the animal.
Such interactions could be a once-off experience, but often develops into a long-term relationship with these horses that you could visit on a weekly basis.
Where possible, it is an amazing addition to workshops or weekend retreats.
– Connecting with Wild Animals
Wild Therapy
Whether it is about the awe of something so beautiful and majestic, or whether it is the fear of being so close to an animal that kills, their physical presence makes for a lasting impression.
- Independent game farms or wildlife sanctuaries that offer private or group experiences
What to expect
These centres created safe environments for one to view these animals in very close proximity, by oneself, in a tranquil, meditative setting.
It is a self-led therapeutic experience, for you to connect with a wild animal; to just sit in solitude and appreciate the moment.
In line with animal conservation guidelines, it is not about touching or ‘playing’ or entertainment. These are wild and dangerous animals, part of rescue & rehabilitation projects or breeding programs.
The animals include lions, cheetahs, hyenas, tigers, elephants, monkeys or birds like vultures or eagles, depending on the facility.
Where 3-day workshops or weekend retreats are arranged at these venues, you will get the opportunity to enjoy this quietness and connection.
– Community service
Pet Therapy
It is when we are lonely that we appreciate the presence of our pets. Sometimes, however, life does not allow us these comforts.
Join our Pet Project and see what a difference it makes to your life.
- A volunteer service where dog & cat owners or shelters, share their pets with you for a while
What to expect
Imagine having someone over for coffee, who brings their dog or cat along for you to play with and cuddle. We all yearn for this kind of unconditional love and acceptance; an experience of joy and hope.
For someone who is unable to care for an animal anymore, this could mean the world. Think for example of the elderly, old age homes, care centres, or someone who just needs companionship for an hour a week.
This could be a meaningful way to add value and purpose to your own life, by offering a service like this.
Neurofeedback
The brain is an amazing organ, and like a muscle, it can be trained. A very apt description of Neurofeedback is that it is like meditation on steroids.
- Independent practitioners who offer a range of services
- Usually 12 to 20 sessions, depending on your ability to learn
What to expect
Neurofeedback is a conditioning technique that uses brain-controlled computer games to teach you to lower your brainwaves. It is a form of biofeedback that uses EEG technology to read your brainwaves in real-time, giving you visual or auditory feedback by indicating your progress in a game scenario.
The aim of the exercises is to relax your mind, which is more difficult than it seems and can be quite tiring, but the effects have a lasting impact.
Neurofeedback exercises train your brain to function more efficiently. You will be building new neural pathways and leveraging the networks in your brain to improve brain health. It may enhance your memory and focus, decrease impulsivity and anxiety, and help you achieve mental clarity, restful sleep, and improved mood.

You merely need to choose which one to follow and the experiences you need to experience, because it will shape your world from this point onwards. It doesn’t really matters which road you choose, as there are no “wrong” turns and no rewards. Just different experiences, and all is good.
What if all it takes is having an open mind to consider the possibility of it. What if there is proof and purpose in it all.
